Nothing Phone (4a) Pro First Impressions: A Bold New Design Direction
The smartphone industry rarely surprises users with design changes, but Nothing. The company unveiled the device alongside the standard Phone (4a) at a launch event in London, and it immediately caught attention for one big reason — a noticeable shift in design.
Nothing has built its identity around transparent smartphones and its unique Glyph lighting system. However, the Phone (4a) Pro takes a slightly different approach while still keeping the brand’s recognizable style.
After spending some hands-on time with the device during the launch event, here are my first impressions of the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro, including its design changes, specifications, and overall feel.
A Major Design Shift for Nothing
One of the biggest highlights of the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro is its completely new aluminium unibody design.
Earlier Nothing smartphones featured a transparent glass back panel that exposed internal components, giving the device a futuristic look. With the Phone (4a) Pro, the company has decided to move toward a more minimal and premium aluminium chassis.
At first glance, the phone looks cleaner and more refined compared to earlier models. The aluminium finish gives the device a solid feel in the hand and makes it look more like a premium flagship device.
However, Nothing hasn’t fully abandoned its design identity.
Instead of a full transparent back panel, the transparent element is now limited to the raised camera plateau. This section still showcases the brand’s industrial-style detailing, allowing users to see the internal design elements beneath the glass.
The result is a smartphone that feels both modern and familiar at the same time.
Improved In-Hand Feel
During my brief hands-on experience, the Phone (4a) Pro felt slightly more comfortable to hold than the standard Phone (4a).
The regular Phone (4a) uses a glass back, which can sometimes feel slippery. The aluminium body of the Pro model provides better grip and gives the device a sturdier feel.
Another interesting detail is a small dimple located in the bottom-left corner of the phone. According to Nothing, this tiny design feature helps users pull the phone out of tight pockets more easily by using their thumb and forefinger.
It may sound like a small thing, but thoughtful details like this are something Nothing is known for.
New Pink Colour Option
Nothing has introduced a Pink colour variant for the Phone (4a) series, and it was clearly the most talked-about color during the launch event.
However, the pink shade on the Phone (4a) Pro is noticeably more subtle compared to the standard Phone (4a).
In slightly dim lighting conditions, the color almost appears neutral instead of bright pink. This gives the phone a more understated and sophisticated look.
Apart from Pink, the Phone (4a) Pro will also be available in Silver and Black, which are the more traditional colour options.
Circular Glyph Matrix Display
The camera module on the back of the Phone (4a) Pro immediately grabs attention.
Nothing has introduced a circular Glyph Matrix display, which appears to be inspired by the design used in the flagship Phone (3).
This display is part of Nothing’s well-known Glyph Interface, which allows the phone to display notifications, alerts, and visual patterns using light.
Interestingly, the Glyph Matrix can also act as a preview screen when taking photos using the rear camera, making it easier to capture selfies with the main camera sensors.
Compared to previous models, the display is slightly larger and supports many of the familiar Glyph features that Nothing users already enjoy.
Triple Camera System
The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro features a triple rear camera setup, offering more versatility for photography.
The camera system includes:
50MP primary camera
8MP ultra-wide camera
50MP periscope telephoto camera
The addition of a periscope telephoto lens is particularly exciting. Periscope lenses allow smartphones to achieve better optical zoom without compromising image quality.
This means users can capture distant subjects more clearly compared to standard telephoto cameras.
For selfies and video calls, the phone features a 32MP front camera.
Large AMOLED Display
The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro comes with a 6.83-inch 1.5K Flexible AMOLED display.
The display also supports a 144Hz refresh rate, which should provide smoother scrolling, gaming, and animations.
This makes the device slightly larger than the standard Phone (4a), giving users more screen space for watching videos, browsing, and gaming.
Performance with Snapdragon 7 Gen 4
Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 processor.
This chipset is expected to deliver improved performance and better efficiency compared to previous models.
While I didn’t have enough time to fully test the phone’s performance during the launch event, the processor should be capable of handling everyday tasks, multitasking, and gaming without major issues.
A full performance analysis will become clearer once the device undergoes detailed testing.
Battery and Software
The smartphone packs a 5400mAh battery, which should comfortably last a full day for most users.
It also supports 50W fast charging, allowing the phone to recharge quickly when needed.
On the software side, the Phone (4a) Pro runs Nothing OS 4.1 based on Android 16 straight out of the box.
Nothing has also promised long-term support for the device:

6 years of security updates
This is a strong commitment that should make the device appealing for users who want their smartphone to stay secure and updated for several years.
Nothing Phone (4a) Pro Price in India
The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro is available in three different configurations:
8GB RAM + 128GB storage – ₹39,999
8GB RAM + 256GB storage – ₹42,999
12GB RAM + 256GB storage – ₹45,999
The price is slightly higher than the previous generation. According to the company, this increase is mainly due to rising component costs and growing demand for advanced technology driven by AI development.
Early Verdict
Based on my early hands-on experience, the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro feels like a bold step forward for the brand.
The new aluminium design gives the phone a more premium feel, while the circular Glyph Matrix display and periscope camera add unique features that help the device stand out in a crowded smartphone market.
For users who prioritize design, clean Android software, and distinctive smartphone features, the Phone (4a) Pro could be an interesting option.
However, it may still be worth waiting for detailed reviews to evaluate the camera performance and real-world usage before making a purchase decision.
